  • Ready, Set Robotics Go!

    Funded Oct 31, 2018

I thank you for your donation of robots to our classroom. My students are fascinated by the robots and are amazed by them. The robots have actually had that same effect with the staff members on campus. Oftentimes, teachers will stop by my class to play with the robots and see what they can do.

I'm excited to begin to incorporate coding and robotics in my classroom. My hope, for the future, is to begin a robotics club and maybe even enter into some robotics competitions.

I am so very thankful for this donation and I'm excited to see where this will lead my students and school into the future.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rhoden-Lewis

  • Got a Carpet?...Not Yet

    Funded Jul 19, 2018

Thank you for your gracious donation. I thought this carpet for my classroom was going to offer a way to organize my students but it has done so much more. This carpet has helped to create a welcoming environment in my classroom in which students are eagerly waiting to enter each day. In fact, I have students who try to skip to my class and I have to return them to their proper class.

When we first received the carport, the students were so excited. The students would enter my classroom and take a seat on the carpet, some would bend down to smell it's "newness". Their favorite thing to do is to draw patterns with their fingers in the carpet. Who knew that would be so much fun?

This carpet has brought more than organization to the classroom; it has created an inviting classroom in which students run into ready to learn each day.”

  • Houston, We Have a Solution... Technology

    Funded Oct 2, 2017

    Thank you donors!

We don't go one day of our lives without the use or assistance of technology so imagine a classroom is without it. This was my class before your donation, we had very limited use of technology. Due to this donation, we were able to use the tablets so students could access more educational programs.

When we first opened the boxes we were all excited to see the new tablets. The excitement didn't end there. Students were able to become more independent in their learning and learn how to navigate the technology.

Again, thank you fro your donation. Many students will benefit from these tablets for years to come.”

  • Move, Learn and Achieve!

    Funded Jan 30, 2017

Thank you for believing in my project and my students. When we first received the items the kids were excited to get the chairs. They came in different colors and now there are enough chairs for everyone to have one!

In our classroom, we use the chairs to help facilitate movement while learning. Because my boys out number my girls we needed a flexible classroom in which students felt free to move around in an organized fashion.

I'm excited and look forward to making my classroom into a flexible classroom. A classroom with flexible desk seating in which students can lie down, sit or stand up to work.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rhoden-Lewis

  • Making Brains Fit for the Future

    Funded Sep 23, 2016

What a blessing you have been to my students. I never imagined in December I would have two girls in my classroom and the rest are boys so the items donated are perfect for my students. Oftentimes, school is not a place where boys can be boys. Because you donated, I've been able to make a flexible classroom environment. Students are able to bounce on their chair balls, work on the floor with surfboards and stand at standing desk to work. My students really enjoy using the movement stretch bands to explore and learn about long and short vowels.

This donation has really motivated me to think outside the box as a teacher. Oh, also when parents come into our classroom they love the environment.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rhoden-Lewis

  • The Reading Rainbow

    Funded Oct 9, 2015

Again, thank you for investing in the minds and hearts of my first grade students. When we received all the items that you help fund for our classroom my students were amazed. It was like Christmas came early. My students were so excited to open all the boxes and see what was in them. They were also filled with questions about our project and why someone would "give us things for free". So, in that instant I taught them about what a donation is and why would people want to help our class. They didn't know that complete strangers would want to help them and believed in them.

We are using our resources for centers and workstations to help teach the students but also allow them to have fun while learning. Also, my classroom has been transformed into a beautiful learning environment in which kids want to come to each day to learn.

This donation has been such a blessing and has recharged me. Sometimes teaching students that are deprived from many things can seem impossible but you have given us all hope that it can be done.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rhoden-Lewis

  • Feeding the Forest: Easy as 1+2+3

    Funded Oct 24, 2014

I would like to thank you for generous donation to my classroom. The impact you have left on my students is immeasurable.

The day I received the email that my project had been funded I presented it to my students and told them that Chevron would be giving materials to our classroom to help them learn. The students were very happy but then they began to ask some troubling questions. My students kept asking why. Why would someone give them something for free? My students did not understand that some stranger would give them something of value for free. This began our discussion on charity and giving but it also gave me the opportunity to explain that people believed in my students. I tell my students all the time that just because you're poor, don't have a nice home, don't wear the best clothes, don't have your parents... doesn't mean that you can't overcome and become someone great. So, Chevron sending these materials validated my statement.

We are so truly grateful for this donation. Since my students have received this donation, they now have the supplies necessary to learn and complete their work. My students are able to use different manipulatives to solve problems and develop higher level thinking. As a teacher, I am able to make my lessons more hands on and engaging because of all the resources that were donated.

    Truly Chevron, thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Rhoden-Lewis

This summer I spent a lot of time thinking and praying about my students and praying that I could be a good teacher to them. When I looked at the names on my roster I never could imagine what I would discover about my students. I knew that I would be teaching at a school in which over 90 percent of the students receive free and reduced lunch. I knew that I would be teaching at a school in which most of the students come from disadvantage homes. But I did not know that I would be teaching students that have seen war and have been separated from their families. The words I hear through broken English describe death and violence are hard for my mind to process because these words are sprouting from the mouths of my 8 year old students. They have experienced seeing family members killed and taken away and they have be labeled a refugee. Even though these children have been exposed to harsher sides of life I look into their eyes and see hope. Hope that burns so bright that it's blinding.
