Each student will use the book to prepare for the continuation of their education in either Honors or Advanced Placement Junior English which requires students to read books that are not parallel to their lives but which takes them into the lives of people whose life experience was radically different from their own. Reading these books develops the kind of empathy and compassion that my students need in order to go forward in their lives as unifiers in our society. Reading develops empathy for the human condition. Reading about characters who experience difficulties in their lives develops compassion. These are two characteristics that our world needs.
