FL Schlagle High School is a Title I school located in Kansas City, Kansas. Schlagle High School is made up of 47% African American students, 34% Hispanic students, 8% white students, and 11% other race students; meaning this is one of the most racially diverse in our nation. 86% of my students are economically disadvantaged and have Free and Reduced Lunch which in turn affects their participation in classes. As a ninth grader teacher, I am the first experience they have with high school English standards along with high school rigor. Most of my students are not on grade level in regards to reading, 70% in fact. It is my hope that engaging lessons coupled with real-world topics will increase the literacy in my class and among my students. I hope and I strive to help students express themselves to the outside world because I know they can make waves in the world.
