It is my personal philosophy that students should read literature that is a balance of classics and young adult literature. An appropriate balance of classic literature and young adult literature is an equally effective route for practicing reading skills and teaching larger concepts and themes--it simply depends upon the student population. In my classroom, my students read literature that reflects them, finding meaning and connections to what they read; my students work collaboratively to reach an common, end goal; my students informally and formally discuss their personal reflections and revelations from our classroom literature; my students, through literature, practice and fine-tune life and social skills, and also begin the journey of discovering their identity.
