I am the librarian in a suburban high school of just under 1300 students. We have a very diverse student population. Almost 50% of the students are on free or reduced lunch and just under 30% of the students are Hispanic. The school is definitely divided between the haves and the have-nots. Many of the students like to read because they don't have access to computers or smart phones at home. The students who tend to frequent the library are often students who come from families that struggle financially or from homes that are not really the best environment for them. Also, many of our English language learners visit the library looking for books.
Despite the definite financial gap between students, the student body at my high school is very cohesive. Students are pleasant and well-mannered and they get along very well with teachers and with one another. They often come into the library to find books and they are very friendly and talkative. I have really enjoyed getting to know them.
