Refugee by Alan Gratz follows three adolescent refugees during three different times in history: a young girl fleeing Cuba in the 90's, a young boy fleeing Syria in modern times, and a young boy fleeing Germany in 1939. Students will read these stories and map the journey's of these three brave young people, as well as research the time period in which these refugees lived. After reading the novel, the students will then translate the stories into a research project on any real modern refugee crisis and how it is being handled by government officials and relief organization. Students will create a visual representation of the country presented and give background information on how the refugee situation started. Students will analyze how effectively the situation has been handled and what they would do differently if they were in a leadership position in government or a relief agency. They will be expected to debate the social responsibility of taking in refugees and the risks involved.
