Gifted and talented (GATE) students have so many positive qualities: learning more quickly and independently than most students their own age, having well-developed vocabulary, as well as advanced reading and writing skills, being motivated, especially on tasks that are challenging or difficult, and holding themselves to higher than usual standards of achievement. This last trait is the one that actually causes problems for my GATE students. Many of my GATE students exhibit traits of anxiety and perfectionism (which only adds extra stress). Some students will become angry or aggressive, while others withdraw from the task and/or group when "things are not going the way they think it should." This year, more emphasis will be placed on social and emotional learning (SEL). Providing a variety of experiences will help my unique learners develop social and emotional competence.
