Why Essential Oils? Essential oils can play an important role in any classroom. Teachers have had excellent outcomes using them to promote a healthy learning environment. Oils can improve and help control classroom behavior. Diffusing a variety of oils can keep the immune system healthy and strong. My classroom can be a place of chaos and concern, yet other times, my students are tired or underwhelmed. Maybe they are just a little too antsy that day and are having trouble calming down. Essential oils can help my students either way. Using essential oils in my classroom, I hope to reduce undesirable behavior, calm students, clear unpleasant odors, boost mood, and sharpen mental focus. Alternate Lighting It can be hard for kids to control their emotions or frustrations throughout the day, and I teach them that breathing and being mindful can help them cope. Telling a student to “get over it” is never going to be the answer. When I can give them an outlet to calm down, it can make a huge difference. Now combine this with the tool of better lighting, I hope to really see a difference. Classroom lighting can be an overlooked factor for success in school. Studies have shown that lighting quality affects students’ abilities to see clearly, concentrate, and perform well in the classroom. Since lighting plays a critical role in our everyday lives, it’s worth it to invest in the quality of light that’s shining down on my students in the classroom. My school, however, has not developed different lighting levels in our classrooms. Many different tasks are being performed in my classroom space, and there is often only one fluorescent lighting level. Lighting in schools has a big influence on students’ health and mood.
