Research shows that boys and girls learn in different ways. While girls may sit and intently listen, boys are more active and often lose focus after periods of time. I want to get ALL my students, especially the boys, up and engaged with their learning. I want them to make connections with the characters and understand their problems by interacting with the stories. By retelling stories with cloth characters and props, all students can dramatize story. With the the felt board, students can retell a story by talking about the character's feelings and problems as they attach the props to it. They can describe the setting, and explain the problem and solution. These speaking skills are important in building a strong literacy foundation in young learners. Learning is often the most effective when students are up watching and learning from each other! This project lends itself to be used in a variety of ways such as whole group following a read aloud or in a small groups for interventions. Students can ask for help from their peers as they are retelling or take turns during the retell to make it a collaborative effort. The ways to use these tools are endless for my students!
