As a math and science teacher, I know I need students to understand and communicate in the language of the subjects. I also know they need to practice the skills of not only writing problems and solving them, but also be able to discuss and explain their thinking. Using whiteboards during guided practice allows me to see exactly what they are doing, as well as provide an easy place for them to show and share their work. What becomes a problem is it takes instructional to retrieve the boards, markers, and erasers and move to their group location. The whiteboards also slowly become stained from frequent use. By having dry erase tables and stools, students will be able to avoid all of these problems and focus on increasing their learning because they can write on the tables and discuss with partners wherever they are! By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student engagement and meaningful interaction, but you will also ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. Students will be able to focus on the academic material at hand, record their thinking on the tables, and immediately discuss with their partners about their thinking. This promotes rich discussions about the work and encourages students to think outside the box to solve problems. Since the work is displayed on the table, it also allows me the opportunity to move from table to table to interact with teams, correct misconceptions on the spot, and guide students who need extra assistance.
