We have some exceptionally gifted music students who really want to learn jazz. We have everything we need to make it happen, except for a few Latin percussion instruments. These Latin percussion instruments will allow our students to perform a wider variety of standard jazz repertoire, much of which is inspired by Cuban and Brazillian music, as well as other other Latin-American cultures. The influence of Latin-America must be emphasized in any quality jazz ensemble, and we want to equip our students with the resources needed to properly learn, appreciate, and perform these styles. Creating a jazz combo will be a great way for students to grow as musicians and performers, and learn skills they can use for a lifetime. These instruments will also benefit our regular music classes which emphasize traditional percussion ensembles, and they will be used in our end-of-year collaborative music production as well.
