This project will serve approximately 600 children attending the Korematsu Discovery Academy and Esperanza Elementary School (both schools are located on the Stonehurst Campus in Oakland, CA). The school population is approximately 70% Latino and 30% African American. 100% of the families at these schools are eligible for free or reduced- price meals. There is a high percentage of families with members who have diabetes and who struggle with obesity. Though located in a resource-poor community, the students and their families come from cultural backgrounds that celebrate and respect working the land and Mother Nature. Children are excited about the garden and all the insects! Families are enthusiastic about the organic food the garden will provide in the future in this "food desert."
