My school is culturally diverse; 85% of our population are English language learners (ELLs). Many of our students come from countries in South America, Haiti, and several other parts of the world. I work with small groups of first graders within their classrooms to provide extra language support during content lessons. I also pull groups of newcomers (non-English speakers) outside of their classes for more intensive language support. It's exciting to see their vigor for learning and to see them helping one another as they become more proficient in the English language. Our school is one that celebrates diversity and I am happy to foster a love of reading at the same time!
