The K-8 foreign language classroom is active and requires high engagement and focus. Students can be found singing and dancing, reading, working independently or in groups, and even listening to authentic songs or videos. For many of my students, this can become uncomfortable and overwhelming causing them sometimes them to shut down. Flexible seating has been shown to increase student engagement, morale, and overall achievement by simply giving students a choice in their learning. This year I am ditching my desks and trading them in for an area rug, swivel seating, lap desks and more to ensure focus and success. My students often ask to stand, dance, lay/sit on the floor, and even take off their shoes to help enhance their learning at any given point in a lesson. For the students who take advantage of these opportunities, I have seen a noticeable difference in focus, engagement, and achievement.
