I worry that if my students are only exposed to outdated examples of literature, they will forever view reading as irrelevant and boring. It's challenging for students to empathize with authors who are thousands of miles or years removed from them. Though we may try to bridge these gaps, students will always gravitate towards books that reflect them and their experiences in the here and now. My students don't know that their experiences are recorded, reflected, and celebrated in the books published today. They don't know that a world of self-discovery awaits them behind the cover of every book. I want my students to see for themselves the power of a good book and develop a lifelong love of reading that will support them for the rest of their lives.
