Many of our K-6 lessons springboard from a folktale, myth, or legend from around the world. Students often perform these tales in-class. It would be amazing to have students create soundscapes as they act. These high-quality instruments will add another dimension to our performances. The stories we learn facilitate the study of language arts, social studies, and even science. They teach values and morals. For example, our sixth graders mapped out the Mediterranean and North Africa across the entire classroom. They then use this map as they performed out the world's oldest play, Ancient Egypt's The Myth of Osiris. Fifth grade learned the tragic Japanese folktale, The Crane Wife," creating movement scenes which analyzed character's differing perspectives. The Greek myth of Echo helped my students understand sound waves. First graders developed self-esteem and learned how to care for friends as they traveled with Kai and Gerta in The Snow Queen. Can you imagine adding sleigh bells or drums to these worlds? My students love the silly, spooky, and magical feelings they get as they immerse themselves in this global heritage. Instruments will carry them into the stories one step farther.
