My 9th grade students are building foundational skills in making evidence-based arguments. As my students read this classic American novel, Of Mice and Men, they will be actively seeking out textual evidence to support their inquiry question: What is the value of friendship? Was George a good friend to Lenny? Was George's final choice the right one to be a good friend to Lenny? Being able to highlight/underline their own books will ensure that students read with a purpose. I will train my students to be active readers who make a habit out of marking up the text. Not only will having their own copies of Of Mice and Men build students' enthusiasm for reading, but being able to write on their own copies will help them to "own" the text -- to select passages that speak to them, to jot down their questions and insights, to make their own meaning.
