My fifth graders are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, my kids come to school each day ready to persevere and embrace all opportunities to learn something new! But, students are not meant to "sit still" and some need more movement than others. Being in motion allows their brains and body to be engaged and improve alertness. Providing students with balance balls will help children reach their full potential in the classroom, especially for those with a strong desire to fidget.
So rather than squash a child's innate need for movement, ball chairs channel their physical energy in a positive way, allowing them to focus on their work more completely and reach their full potential as learners.
My students have a voice about what is and is not working in our classroom. Giving students a choice in their learning environment promotes collaborative learning and a comfortable, engaging classroom. My students have learned to evaluate when and where they do their best work and many of them are not comfortable sitting in a traditional desk all day. Flexible seating has met many needs my students have, but we need more options to meet more individual needs. Students using ball chairs are able to sit still, focus, and be more engaged during lessons.
