My students at New Caney High School mostly come from blue-collar, working families. Many of their parents work long hours just to provide the basics, and some of my students have responsibilities outside of school that most kids their age shouldn't have to worry about. Some work after school, help take care of younger siblings, or help their families however they can. I have students who come to school tired, stressed, or worried about things that have nothing to do with what is happening in the classroom. And yet, they still show up. They still try. My students may not always have the same opportunities or support as other kids, but they have an incredible amount of heart and determination. I want them to know that their circumstances do not define them and that they deserve every opportunity to succeed.
