I teach at a title one school in the suburbs of a large city. I have four different classes 25 of 10-12 year old Fifth graders. My students range from gifted and talented to special education and many in between. I currently have half boys and half girls. At this age, the students are more worried about social issues than their education. My students love doing activities with partners and small groups so they can spend time with a friend. This unit has many hands- on activities and games students will be working with a partner and sometimes in a small group. At this age, most students do not find learning intrinsically rewarding, so we have to offer rewards and prizes to help motivate them. Even though many want to believe they are teenagers, they are still young enough that little prizes gets them excited.
