Out of 264 6th graders enrolled in my school, approximately 35% of them read two or more grade levels below their current grade level. Many of these students don't enjoy reading because reading is hard for them. Over the past two years, I have spent over $1000 building my own classroom library so students would have current and classic materials to read. What is lacking in my classroom is a place for them to read comfortably in my classroom. Reading is essential to success and making reading fun is my goal. The addition of the area rug will allow my students to have a defined space for reading. The bean bags will provide them with comfortable, yet fun seating for students to sit down and enjoy a book. In our district adopted curriculum, struggling readers are given 20 minutes each day to read in their independent reading book. It would be fantastic to have a place for them to read that isn't at their desk. My goal is to give these students every opportunity to become the readers they can be and learn to love reading.
