Our students need more practice reading and access to reading materials. We have limited books at their specific reading levels and limited means to have books above their reading level read aloud to them. Reading aloud to a child dramatically increases their potential in being able to read on their own. While I am able to read to students in small group, when I am teaching another group of students the independent workers need targeted practice to be successful. Having access to Kindle Fire provide many books at my students' reading level and will also provide opportunities for them to hear books read aloud. We would use the Kindle Fire for independent time when I am teaching other small groups so that even when I am not directly instructing them they still are practicing reading skills. We chose the Kindle Fire for our students because that device is capable of access to books and the internet/app downloads. There are many math apps that can also be used for independent practice. Many of our students do not recognize numbers or know how to write numbers up to 100 so number tracing apps give them skills to practice. For children learning basic addition and subtraction facts many apps can be downloaded for repetitive and continued practice that my students need for mastery. The Kindle Fire will also be used during small group instruction for mathematics skills as well as reading skills.
