I teach in the same rural community where I grew up and went to school. Most of my students do not have much money, but they are extremely creative (and talented!) kids with big dreams. One student hopes to become an actress. One wants to be a writer. I have future doctors, nurses, mechanics, marines, teachers, veterinarians, and psychologists sitting in my classroom every day, and these are just the kids who have already decided what they want to do with their lives! Given the opportunity, I know that many of these kids will achieve their goals. Our community is supportive, providing supplies when they can. But books are not cheap. And I know that, for my students to succeed, they need more exposure to great literature of all types.
