My students are a diverse bunch with varying interests and needs. They attend a Title I school in a low SES community and there are little funds and support things as simple as class sets of books. One thing I like to build our classroom community is a love of literacy. One way I do this is by having a "reading mentor" (my father- retired teacher) who can share his experiences as a reader and inspire the students to develop their own. I'm lucky to have the opportunity to loop with half of my class, so, one thing I know for sure is that if there is a series of books with a little humor, action & figurative language, my students are sure to read it. Especially if there is a buzz about it. Last year I bought the series set of Percy Jackson books and they flew off the shelves! My goal is to inspire the upcoming 5th graders to develop as and consider themselves readers, while keeping my 6th graders inspired to read-on, and deepen their roles as literacy lovers!
