This year I have had the opportunity to work with Autistic students and students with Sensory Processing Disorder. I have seen how important it is to have a variety of seating options that allows them to feel comfortable and safe throughout the day. In my classroom, I have 24 standard desks and hard plastic chairs that are not conducive to my special needs children. Research has shown it is good for all students! I have asked for wobble stools and exercise balls that my students can sit on and move as we continue to learn. I have also asked for wobble cushions that can be placed in regular chairs or on the floor to meet the sensory needs of my kids. I have also asked for lap desks that will allow students to have a sturdy work space on the floor and a standing desk that can be adjusted to various heights for students who need to stand and work. Finally, a soft bean bag chair for my students who need to relax. Think about people who sit down to work at Starbucks: there are areas with hard chairs and soft couches, there are stools and chairs with backs, there are areas with bright lights and dim lights: we choose where we will be most comfortable to ensure we are productive. This is a skill we need to offer students as well, especially those who process their senses differently.
