I teach Spanish to second through fifth graders and I am fortunate to have my own classroom. The size difference between a 7 year old and a 10 year old can be substantial. The chairs that are available in my classroom are extremely heavy and hard for some of the smaller children to move (especially when they need to put them up at the end of the day). There are also not enough small chairs for the younger students and not enough larger chairs for the taller students. As a result, there are always students feeling uncomfortable and sometimes self-conscious in my room. I apologize to them but there is nothing I can do to make it better. It is awful to be seated in a chair where your feet don't reach the floor, your legs don't fit under the desk or you are seated so low it is hard to see the paper on top of your desk. Many of them end up having to stand. I have decided to reach out to the broader community to see if someone is willing to help. I have chosen stools that are of a medium size so that I believe they will accommodate all of the learners in the room.
