I currently teach 7th & 8th Grade Math and Science at a Title I K through 8 school in the Sacramento area. My students come from a wide range of backgrounds, many are English language learners, and a good number are refugees, several from the Middle East, who are adjusting to a new language and a new country while also being twelve and thirteen years old. I've learned that kids can't fully show up for a math problem or a lab if they're carrying something heavier underneath it. So before I worry about test scores, I try to make sure my students have what they need to walk in the door ready. Everything I ask for is in service of that.
