My school is in a very rural part of Kentucky where incomes are typically low. Some of my students come to school with empty bellies and unwashed clothes. Purchasing school supplies is a concern so far removed from their means, it practically never crosses their minds. High integration of math, science, and engineering is very hard due to a lack of extra funding to support such endeavors. Many students don't have ambitions to do much outside of high school because they don't know what opportunities lie beyond the county line. They only know what they have experienced, and in a small town, job prospects are limited.
