This year I have made it a goal to update my classroom library. Throughout the course of the year, I have added over 50 new books to the shelves. The progress has been slower than I had anticipated. However, even though I have slowly added new books, my students have demonstrated that they are hungry for new books and topics. They have seen me carry in new books, post new books in my room, and listened as I told them about the latest additions I have found. Their excitement has sparked my fire to continue to provide more books to the classroom library more quickly than I have been, but my budget can only go so far. We are requesting more books. The students themselves have made recommendations, requests, or references to books and series such as Broken, Speak, Looking for Alaska, and One of Us is Lying. The majority of the books we have requested address themes that many young kids face in their daily lives while others provide a view of a life much different than their own. These novels will allow the students the chance to develop a better understanding of who they are, what they believe in, and how that differs from others. These novels will be used for independent reading selections where students will be able to read on their own time and during "down" time throughout the day. It will also allow them the chance to have class discussions about authors, plot, themes, characters, setting and other elements on their own.
