The students in our high school can be described in one word. Amazing. On a daily basis they overcome obstacles that I could not imagine facing at their age. A large percentage of our students are new to the country and just beginning to learn the English language. Others work full time jobs to help support the family. Many are parents themselves and struggle to stay in school, even if it is an important goal to them. For some students, our school is the most stable environment that they know. This is especially true for our homeless students. Our kids give so much of themselves to us as teachers. Even when exhausted, or hungry, or thinking about the chaos in their own lives, they will still try to make us happy. They will crack open that novel, or try that math problem one more time. We owe them an environment that will support, nurture, and inspire them and much as they inspire us.
