My class consists of 22 first graders that are eager to learn about events taking place around them as well as how to read. They attend a school where a large percentage of the population receives free or reduced lunch. Many of their parents have lost their jobs, due to the economy. They barely have enough to bring in the necessary supplies, such as paper and pencils. They are eager to learn to read. I would like for them to be able to read about events taking place in their world. Many of these students have no access to Internet, newspaper, news programs, etc. in their homes.
