Do you remember learning how to count? When did you learn your ABCs? These are basic skills that lay the foundation for ALL learning. My students will enter school having not mastered, or even acquired the basics. Half of my students will battle a language barrier while trying to learn these fundamental skills. My students' socioeconomic status puts them at a disadvantage when compared to their wealthier peers, who often enter Kindergarten having already learned how to count and identify letters. My kids are more likely to read below grade level throughout their tenure at school. They are less likely to graduate on time from high school AND be prepared to enter a four-year college. The reality is that each year of their schooling needs to be path changing to set them up to be competitive with children in even the wealthiest school districts so that they grow to be responsible and productive global citizens.
