As I reflect over the students I have had in the past three years, I have noticed trends. One is that my students are loving and caring. A week can't go by without getting a heartfelt drawing, poem, or letter. As you will see below, my students do not have the easiest lives. As a Title 1 school and a school with a high percentage of free lunch, many of my students are struggling with things in life a lot more important than trying to finish a homework assignment. Students in my school are being raised by grandparents and, in some cases, even great-grandparents. Sometimes, students have a parent or parents in jail. I have experienced students who live in homes where their caregivers do not know how to read. Many students enter my fourth grade classroom reading below grade level, sometime even three grades below. Despite all of this, we do not give up. Our school strives to help these students reach beyond their circumstances to become successful, lifelong learners.
