I work in a Montessori, lower-elementary (6-9 age group) classroom. I am new to the school and have been preparing materials over my summer break for the upcoming year. There is an extreme lack of science and culture opportunities for these children to explore. At this age level, the explosion for wanting to learn science and culture is huge. They are trying to connect themselves to the world. What better way to connect yourself, then to learn through hands-on experiences? Figure out why things work? These children are always questioning things at this age and by exploring with their hands they can learn to seek information, and answer questions on their own. With education being so geared towards math and language, these kids are craving science and they don't even know it!
