Adding books with diverse characters and themes to our classroom libraries will continue to enhance the print-rich classrooms that we strive to create. Our classroom libraries are a place where our students can go to seek topics of interest and curiosity, explore their imagination and identify with familiarity. Our students really enjoy exploring different topics and connecting their reading to their personal lives and experiences. All of these books have been chosen with our students in mind. Our students will be able to choose from a wide variety of books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time while learning about a greater range of experiences. With these new books, our students will be able to choose from a variety of books about a diverse range of cultures, topics, traditions, lifestyles, races and more - both books that represent them as well as books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help our students grow stronger in both their reading as well as their sense of self and awareness about those around them. Our students already have shown an astonishing interest in a vast array of topics; increasing the representation of diversity in our classroom libraries will provide them with countless opportunities to broaden their perspective on themselves as well as others.
