I teach a bilingual fifth grade class in Colorado. All 34 of my students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Yes, 34 students in one elementary classroom... this is too many, but our school does not have the funds to hire another teacher, and to be honest, I couldn't bear the idea of any one of my kids going to another classroom! They are all wonderful, motivated kids, but too many of my students are reading Clifford books instead of Harry Potter- meaning that they are reading at a 1st or 2nd grade level. Through creating a classroom community focused on achievement and growth, the students have become invested in their learning, but still face challenges in many aspects of their lives. These students CAN achieve, yet they are faced with so many setbacks... please help me to inspire them and help them attain their goals of one day going to college.
