My students live in a high poverty environment with several people telling them that they can only go so far. As an educator, I attempt to burst through the glass ceiling where students can see things but not aspire to be them. I inspire my students to think beyond the now and into the future. Reading is an escape. Unfortunately, reading is not a high priority for my students, and when they are eager to read a particular book, it is either unavailable or looks unappealing from severe wear and tear. It becomes uninspiring, and the students then look for alternatives, which take them further away from the texts. My students are deemed at risk, and there is not a high expectation for graduation.
