Our small high school is located in a rather rural area with only approximately 380 students in grades 7-12. When I began my tenure here, the graduating class totaled 19 with only one headed to college. Today, with the help of the entire team of our staff in 'AVID-izing' our school, we turned it around with more than 60% of our seniors attending higher educational institutions. Many of our students come from poor families, immigrants, with parents never having the opportunity to enroll in college. Our students are going to break that barrier. They want to go to college despite numerous challenges, one being an uninviting school library. We need books to build our futures and educational intellect. In enhancing our college-bound culture, my students took the initiative to design a College Park as a gathering place for students to read and study. With budget cuts, books are outdated, damaged, and embarrassingly limited. Building a small library is the start of our dream.
