The majority of my students are new brand arrivals to the United States, both them and their family. They come from many different countries -- all over Central America plus refugees from Thailand, Myanmar, Russia -- and from families where no English is spoken at home. They attend a public school in a small Iowa town where 60% of the population is Hispanic and more than 80% of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Even coming from this background, my students are eager to learn and soak up every thing I can throw at them. They are so active, participating and involved in the activities presented to them to learn English. I see my students, from kindergarten to 4th grade, working hard to achieve the goals they've set for themselves, and for their future. So many of the parents are active participants in their children's education, working with me to help their child continue to progress. They have a great support system; all we need now are the tools.
