We are an elementary school in Texas. We have around 600 students. Our population is about 50 percent African American and about 50 percent Hispanic. We teach Pre-K (4 year olds) to 5th grade. Our school is about 98 percent economically disadvantaged. Our campus has more children who live in poverty than any other school in the district. Our students often live in single parent homes. Many of the students live with a relative such a grandmother or great grandmother. We have a rotating enrichment schedule for our students. We have library, music, PE, and music and movement each week. We call these 45 minute classes specials. We strive to make this a productive and enjoyable time for the students. We reinforce skills that are being taught in the classroom. Our students love specials. Almost every day, I hear a student with a big smile on his or her face say: "I am coming to library today."
