Play is a serious and purposeful activity. In a safe and supportive environment, children are able to express themselves when they are unable to find the words to communicate their thoughts and feelings. The experiential activities that happen in play provide a unique opportunity for children to regulate, practice, communicate, express, and experience a sense of mastery and self confidence. Having access to sensory toys such as a weighted lizard, Play-Doh, and magnets can help students calm their central nervous system throughout the school day. Creating art projects with pastels, color switcher markers, and various miniatures help students express and accept themselves in a way that the world around them doesn’t always offer. Throughout the day these materials will offer students opportunities to identity and express their emotions, increase self expression skills, and have some much-needed play time.
