Coding is a new literacy that our 21st century learners must learn in our changing world. Exposure to coding activities, even in early childhood, can ensure academic and future success. Beebots help introduce students to coding through a hands-on, interactive experience. Students program the Beebots to move (forward, backward, left, and right) through obstacle courses and other learning activities. With the technology field advancing and expanding, teaching coding to our youngest students is preparing them for the jobs of the future (which may not even exist yet)! These simple robots are a great tool for teaching students sequencing, estimation, directional skills, problem-solving, and relationship skills. This child-friendly tool would be introduced in a large group setting. And with practice and reinforcement, students would construct their own obstacle courses and problems for the Beebot to navigate. These robots would be used throughout curriculum areas, reinforcing and reviewing a spectrum of topics and concepts. By introducing my young students to coding in the early childhood years, we are setting a foundation for more advanced coding experiences and careers.
