My students are eager learners! They come to school each morning, excited to learn something new. First-graders face many challenges while learning to read and write. They attend a school that is over 50 years old, located in a rural area of our state. Military and agricultural jobs are the main-stay of our community. We are a Title I school. The majority of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Our state education budget is entering year three of pro-ration. Teachers will receive $134 for supplies...for the entire school year. There is simply no money to provide all basic requirements of a classroom, much less to purchase any extras for enrichment. Many students live in single-family homes. In my classroom, we have a variety of learners. Autistic students, accelerated learners, as well as struggling special needs students work and play together in my class each day.
