My 11th and 12th grade English students have mild to moderate disabilities that prevent them from learning in the traditional, linear classroom. Many of them do not read at grade level, and many live close to or below the poverty line. Some students do not have access to even basic technology at home, which is in stark contrast to the technology-rich center they live mere miles from. Based on negative classroom experiences they have had in the past, many are shy to speak up. I've found that the best way for my students to open up, engage with and contribute to their education is to provide a more interactive learning experience for them, including collaboration, visuals and kinesthetic activities. I want my students to be able to improve their English reading and writing skills, connect with the texts we are reading, and realize there is more than one way to solve a problem.
