Our school, while beautiful enough to be featured on TV and in movies, is not air-conditioned. This makes for some miserable days for students. Even if it's relatively cool outside, those old walls are thick and my classroom doesn't get a cross breeze. Needless to say, it gets HOT! Student comfort is important for motivation, focus, and learning. When it's 90 degrees or hotter in my classroom, the students have difficultly taking interest and concentrating on lessons and tasks. This problem is going to become worse in the next couple of years as our school district plans to start school before labor day, at the end of the summer. Fans will circulate the air in the room and cool it off, helping the kids to "chill", so that they can learn.
