I have 26 students in my 5th grade Title I class. They are ages 10-12, all except 2 are Hispanic and bilingual. One of the other 2 is Caucasian and the other is of mixed race, African American and Caucasian. I have 14 boys and 12 girls. Based on multiple mandated tests administered to all students last year and this year, 6 of the 26 have more challenging needs, and attend a required intensive E.L.A. intervention program for 30 minutes each week. Two of those students have been in the United States less than 3 years. I have 1 student who has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). He is on an Individualized Education Program plan, which allows him to receive additional E.L.A. support in our resource program for one hour. Major challenges include creating space for children with a wide variety of abilities to comfortably act and collaborate with autonomy in a natural way.
