Montessori education is a child-centered approach to learning. At our school, we discuss the importance of caring for all living beings, teaching practical life skills, and using the environment as a teacher. Using an AeroGarden enables students to experience all three of these themes by "doing." My project is important because it is a project my students will do for themselves- they will be able to take what they learn and apply it to their everyday lives. Growing a garden will be especially meaningful during the long and dark winters of Alaska. We will use the calendar to keep track of the growth of our vegetables and once they are ready to harvest, students will be eager to reap the bounty of their hard work. Gardening is an activity that requires planning, hard work, patience, and an appreciation for life. These are practical life skills students will remember, and appreciate, throughout their lives.
