At the end of the year I had a discussion with my RISE students about why students do not stay on campus to study and access resources. The students discussed not having a space that felt inviting and comfortable. As a group we brainstormed ideas for what would help us create the ideal environment. My students serve as mentors and tutors, and having a space like this would help them meet their goals for helping other students. One of the main reasons students fail courses is because they have an excessive number of missing assignments and lack the proper resources at home to complete their work. We have Chromebooks and general school supplies stocked in our room currently. We need a space that provides students with options for different types of learning activities, including group study and independent work. As a group, we came to the conclusion that our space has to provide a comfortable home-like environment. The products that I have selected will help my students by providing them with flexible seating options and lighting for some of our independent study spaces. The bean bags and gaming chairs will help some of my students that work better with alternative seating options because it provides them with the opportunity to shift around more while being comfortable enough to focus on their materials. We need students to access our space so they can receive support from their peer tutors and teachers outside of class time. It is essential to help students develop study skills and to teach them to advocate for their academic success. This will help them be more successful in college. Providing a space like this would help encourage more students to stay during open periods or after school.
