I teach middle school special education in a large, suburban school district in the Midwest. We are surrounded by prosperity, yet we are in what I call a "pocket of poverty." Several homeless shelters are within our boundaries. Half of our students receive free or reduced-fee lunch. Many of our students are bi-lingual, with some students barely fluent in English. My students are funny and sweet and full of life. Most have intellectual and/or physical disabilities. Some are also on the autism spectrum. They love school passionately and hate to be absent. I've had parents tell me their child begged to return to school the day after a major surgery! I wish everyone approached life with the joy and fierce determination "my" kids demonstrate every day. My wish is that my students grow into happy, healthy human beings with rich and fulfilling lives. If I can contribute to that, then my time has been well spent.
