I teach Ancient Civilizations and English/Language Arts at a STEAM-focus middle school in the California high desert. I teach writing and argumentation in the context of other content they are learning, and team teach closely with my partner teacher who teaches science and math. I teach ancient history through the lens of archaeology, the science which has taught us most of what we know about ancient people, and work hard to ensure my students have access to as much hands-on material and experience as possible. I have a display case that acts as the classroom museum, and I am collecting and making replica artifacts. Over 80% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and an unusually high proportion of our school's students are foster children. Our students choose to attend this school and come from all over the district, many by bus. They are diverse in backgrounds, needs, and talents.
